Building a Love of Reading from the Very Beginning
The Baby Book Bag program encourages parents to being reading with their children from birth, helping build early literacy skills and a lifelong love of reading.
Founded in 1994 by former Executive Director Helen Crunick, the program provides every baby born at UPMC Washington with a book bag containing books, literacy resources, and family-focused materials that support early learning and development.
Since its inception, more than 52,000 Baby Book Bags have been distributed to families throughout our community, creating a lasting legacy of literacy and learning.
